"the word tribal relates to a group or community with similar customs and traditions."

In tattooing, everyone's mind automatically goes to tribal tattoos when they hear the word tribal.

When I chose the name for my tattoo fanzine years ago, the tattoo tour, and eventually for the books, I had something else in mind: Our Tribe, Our Tribal behaviors, Our History, and Our Traditions!

In our fast-moving society, these things often get lost or worse, don't matter to folks, to begin with. Our goal is to preserve tattoo history first and foremost. No matter if the book topic is historical or visual. To document the best of the past and present.

“I finally felt motivated to make this book happen mid-last year. Clients and friends mentioned or suggested it over the years. So, it began. I figured I’d take a year to work on it but because of a recent move I had extra time so it was completed ahead of schedule. Feeling I covered a lot, verging on overkill, hopefully not. I called it done after going over 200 pages. Importantly, I wanted to pay tribute to the main artists and tattoo artists who had the biggest impact on me, most especially in the realm of tigers. I tried to incorporate a good amount of suggestions on executing tigers, some pop culture hybrids, cultural/regional influences, a touch of realistic illustrative approaches, and wild fantasy-influenced tigers. Hopefully, it will be a helpful “go-to” book. Whether it be directly in future tattoo jobs or to grab a few ideas and be inspired.” - Tim Lehi

"For the last twenty-five years, Chris Garver has kept sketchbooks containing ideas and images for tattoos and paintings.

Many of the pages in this book are filled with a mix of ideas and styles, recent images alongside ones done decades ago. Loose stencils, sketches, and clippings pasted on top of existing drawings turned into collages without any rules or pre-planned concepts.

This book is a compilation of pages from several sketchbooks that span most of Chris’s career as an artist, and we’re pleased to share it with you.

“These pages were not originally intended for any eyes other than mine. In many cases, I created them only for my own amusement. Always having a sketchbook on hand allowed me to refine my skills and techniques. These books have served as a constant source of inspiration and a way to experiment with new ideas.” - Chris Garver
